As a national key research and education institution of marine science, Tongji University plays important role in popular science education of marine science and technology. It can be dated back at least to the early 1980s when Dr. Xingchun Jin published a best-sell popular science book titled “Drifting Continents” in 1980. Public aspiration for marine knowledge has been overwhelmingly boosted in the new century due to globalization. Marine-science outreach programs become an important part of popular science education for primary and middle school students. Since 2005, Tongji University has set up several marine-science outreach programmes to meet for public requirement. These programmes include: (1) “Ocean Festival” activities at Tongji main campus since 2005, usually lasting for more one month from early May to June 8 (World Ocean Day); (2) public website (www.undersea.cn) for general knowledge of deep-sea science and technology since 2008; (3) two infrastructure platforms for popular science exhibition and interactions, Deep-sea Science Museum (400 m2) in 2008 and Deep-sea Exploration Pavilion (500 m2) in 2013; (4) cooperation with Tongji Secondary Affiliated High School to set up an innovation platform of Marine and Earth Sciences, co-directing innovation programmes since 2010; (5) general knowledge course packages open to undergraduate students registered in Shanghai universities since 2011; (6) popular science lectures by professors at some affiliated high schools in Shanghai and Guizhou, known as “Seedling Plan” for the future scientific talents since 2011; (7) popular science lectures by undergraduate and graduate students at primary, middle and high schools since 2012; (8) cooperation with Qinghua High School in Guiyang to set up an innovation platform of new energy and resource technology since 2016; and so on. Our platforms for popular science education are high diversified because our targets are at different levels. We will continue to explore more outreach platforms to meet the growing need of marine science and technology knowledge.
