Reef fishes are an important part of Hong Kong, both alive and naturally in the water, and as meals on our plates brought to local restaurants from all over the world. However, both natural and food reef fishes represent many mysteries to current knowledge. Underwater, we have little data for what species live in local waters, where they reside and whether or not species composition has changed since past records. As food fishes, there is a lack of information for where the individuals are being brought to Hong Kong from, via which transportation modes they travel to Hong Kong on, and implications in illegal trades of species such as the Humphead wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and shark species. Recent research effort have sought to debunk some of these mysteries, with interesting initial results. |
