Heterotrophic bacteria could utilize dissolved organic matter (DOM) for survival and change the composition of DOM in the ocean. We focused on the physiological and “–omics” features of members of the phylum Bacteroidetes and Roseobacter clade bacteria that were distributed across diverse marine niches, providing genetics evidence for the role of these bacteria as carbon fixation and transformation. The combined biological and chemical molecules data showed the direct link between the dynamics of heterotrophic bacteria and DOM composition.
