An introduction on algorithms and software for prioritizing marine protected areas

| Marine protected areas are an important tool for conserving marine biodiversity and ecosystems. Here, by introducing a variety of optimization algorithms and software that have been heavily applied in prioritizing terrestrial protected areas, I showcase and demonstrate how these statistical methods and software can be effectively applied to identify marine and coastal conservation areas. In particular, given that Chinese government is paying increasing attention to coastal and marine environmental conditions, I predict that marine conservation area identification would become a hot research topic in China and adjacent regions over the next ten years. |
