The Ocean plays an increasingly important role throughout the world. It becomes the second living space to human beings. More than half of the world¡¯s population lives on the coasts, and the number is rising rapidly. Moreover, the ocean holds considerable amounts of precious minerals and resources. In China, the ocean has a fundamental strategic importance. The Report to the 18th People¡¯s Congress of CPC clearly set forth that China should develop its ocean power, improve its ability in marine and make efforts on ecological environment protection. By implementing the maritime strategies of Chinese government, Zhejiang University (ZJU) is striving to improve the marine resource development, protect the maritime rights and interests and make contribution to the marine power construction. From public education perspective, Zhejiang University has conducted a lot of education programs to promote the sea-consciousness in our country. In 2014, undergraduate volunteers from Ocean College, ZJU held four outreach activities named ¡®Yumiao Plan¡¯ for primary students, introducing basic knowledge of oceanology and marine biology, which enjoys a great popularity in teenagers. In 2015, one of the Students Quality Training Projects (SQTP), organized by postgraduates, aimed to make school kids be interested in ocean, in terms of introducing ocean origins, creatures under the sea and submarine volcanoes. In 2016, the Dean of Ocean College, Professor Ying Chen, has given a series of lectures to the public from geological, historical, technical, military and economical perspectives. Citizens and also government officials benefit from the lectures a lot. These outreach activities can not only establish essence of sea-consciousness and enrich ocean knowledge, but also support marine resource development and serve oceanic strategies of China.
