The rapidly growing demand for energy and the environmental concerns about carbon dioxide emissions make the development of renewable biofuels more and more attractive. Tremendous academic and industrial efforts have been made to produce bioethanol, which is one major type of biofuel. In this research, we introduced new genes and new promoters into Synechocystis sp. PCC 7002 in order to create a novel pathway for synthesis of ethanol and get higher production. Deng and Coleman (1999) achieved 0.23 g L-1 of ethanol production using Synechococcus elongates PCC 7942 (formerly, Anacystis nidulans R2) by introducing pdc encoding for pyruvate decarboxylase, and adh encoding for alcohol dehydrogenase from Zymomonas mobilis. To raise production of ethanol, we use different promoters to control expression levels of the pdc and adh gene respectively, as demonstrate by green fluorescent protein(GFP) expression intensity.
