Diatoms are one of the most successful phytoplankton groups, adapting to and surviving in varying environmental conditions. Ocean acidification is a widely concerned environmental issue. Although the effects of ocean acidification on diatoms have been studied intensively, the knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of diatom in response to ocean acidification is still very incomplete. By strand-specific RNA sequencing, we analyzed the global transcriptome changes of the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum in response to ocean acidification. This study reports previously unidentified genes highly responsive to ocean acidification in P. tricornutum. Our data also uncover the complexity of the molecular mechanims of the P. tricornutum to ocean acidification. Finally, we identify a series of novel long intergenic nonprotein coding RNAs (lincRNAs) specifically responsive to ocean acidification, suggesting putative regulatory roles in the regulation of inorganic carbonate and pH homeostasis. Our work provides additional molecular insights into the response of diatoms to ocean acidification, and opens up novel routes to address and explore the function and regulatory roles of P. tricornutum lincRNAs in the context of environmental stimuli.
