Halogenated flame retardants are widely used as additives in polyurethane foams, textiles, electronic equipment to slow the spread of fire. Due to restriction on use of the traditional brominated flame retardants such as Tetra-BDE, Penta-BDE, Hexa-BDE and Octa-BDE, some alternative brominated flame retardants such as DBDPE, HBB, PBEB, DPTE, PBT, TBPH, TBE and TBB were produced. Besides, DPs, which belongs to chlorine flame retardants, are also popular used in wires and cables. In this study, we investigated 22 sediments, 30 filter samples and 30 XAD samples in Xiaoqing River. The results showed that DBDPE and BDE209 were the main components of HFRs in sediments samples. However, DBDPE and DPs were the predominant flame retardants in water samples. Besides, the HFRs mainly existed in particle phase due to the physico-chemical properties of HFRs. The spatial distribution of HFRs showed that the HFRs distributions were controlled by sources distribution.
