The search for microbial diversity-productivity relationships in marine ecosystem has challenged ecologists for decades. Different diversity-productivity patterns have been proposed, in which the hump-shaped response has been considered to be canonical. However, the humped pattern becomes increasingly controversial due to the joint controlling on productivity and diversity by a complex network of process. Here, based on the biogeochemical and physical observations from Tara Oceans, the structural equation model (SEM) is used to detect the underlying mechanisms linking productivity and diversity. We find that the integrative model has substantially higher explanatory power than traditional bivariate analyses. In addition, the direct and indirect effects detected by SEM reveal several important relationships that hidden behind the net effects of environmental factors on the microbial diversity-productivity. This research will help us to better understand the causal mechanisms linking microbial diversity and productivity in the complex natural systems. |
