Abstract: 51surface sediments were collected of the Yangze River estuary and the Old Yellow River Estuary in October and November 2015, using high performance liquid chromatography for determination of the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The total PAHs level reached 4.23 ~ 292.39 ng/g and the average concentration was 67.40 ng/g. Compared with other sea areas, the survey sea areas was at a low PAHs pollution level. The distribution and source of PAHs based on statistical analysis and characteristic ratio method in the Yangze Estuary and the Old Yellow River Estuary. The results showed that the main source of surface sediment PAHs in study area were originated from all kinds of mixed combustion of source and oil sources. Based on the Sediment Quality Guidelines and the effect of low/medium value interval method (ERL/ERM), PAHs in surface sediments in the study area for ecological risk assessment, the results show that the potential ecological risk of the Yangtze river estuary and the Old Yeliow River Estuary is low level, but the potential ecological risks should also be taken seriously.
