Abstract: Using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to determine the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of the 32 surface sediment samples in the south Coastal Mud Area off Zhejiang and Fujian, the distribution, sources and ecological risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the south Coastal Mud Area off Zhejiang and Fujian are discussed. The results showed that the total PAHs concentrations of each sample site are between 12.95 ~ 12.95 ng/g, comparing with other area , it belongs to the lower levels. Characteristics of the molecular ratio method and SPSS analysis results showed that PAHs in the study area mainly comes from the combustion, such as coal and oil, and partly from the mixture of combustion and oil source. Ecological risk assessment results showed that there may be ecological risk in a certain degree in the the south Coastal Mud Area off Zhejiang and Fujian, and we should take more attention to that and take relevant measures to protect the marine environment.. Key words: the south Coastal Mud Area off Zhejiang and Fujian; PAHs; Ecological risk assessment
