Travel


There are a number of means of travelling to the SOLAS Summer School depending upon where you are located and your budget.

The School is held at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science, Xiamen University in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, China.

You are expected to arrive on Thursday 22 August 2013 and depart on Tuesday 3 September 2013. The school will start early morning on Friday 23 August and finish late afternoon on Monday 2 September 2013.

Accommodation at Caiqingjie Building (蔡清洁楼) on the Xiamen University campus will ONLY be available the nights of 22 August till 2 September inclusive. If you plan to arrive early or depart late, please notify the LOC of your schedule and you will have to pay the extra stays.

 

Ø  Getting to Xiamen

l   By air:

For international flights, especially from Europe and USA, we recommend you get to Xiamen by transferring from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Hong Kong, Bangkok, or Seoul. Book as early as possible as Xiamen is a popular tourist city. Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport is located on the northeastern tip of Xiamen Island and 20 km from Xiamen University. Ø  From Xiamen Airport Xiamen University

l   Organised bus from and to Xiamen Airport:

We strongly recommend you to consider using the organised bus which is included in your registration fee.

4 buses will be organised to collect people arriving at Xiamen airport on 22 August (Approximate times: 10:00 and 20:00). The exact collection time will be confirmed nearer to the time. The exact bus arrival times will be adjusted according to the arrival times of all participants.

4 buses will be provided for you to return to Xiamen airport on 3 September 2013 (Approximate times: 06:00 and 20:00). The exact bus departure times will be adjusted according to the flight departure times of all participants.

l   Taxi (recommended):

Taxis can be hailed down with ease, except for the rush hour 17:00-18:00. The taxi fare charge in Xiamen is 8 RMB (9.6 RMB during the time 11 pm to 5 am) for the first 3 km and 2 RMB per km thereafter. Fares are subject to 2 RMB gas surcharge each journey. The taxi from the airport to the university costs about 25 minutes and about 50 RMB.

l   Public Bus

Several public transport routes are available within the city. A fare of 1 RMB must be entered into a box on entry, therefore, change is required. The city buses are equipped with air conditions. The bus schedule and stop information will be posted in June 2013.
