From Moment to Movement: Capturing Plankton Spatial and Temporal Dynamics Using In Situ Plankton Imaging Systems

AbstractThis research explores the spatial and temporal dynamics of plankton communities in coastal waters through the deployment of advanced in situ plankton imaging systems, PlanktonScope. By integrating real-time, high-resolution imaging technologies in their natural habitats, we are able to observe and analyze the movements and interactions of various plankton species over time. This approach not only provides unprecedented insights into the ecological roles of plankton but also enhances our understanding of their responses to environmental changes, contributing to more informed conservation strategies and resources management.

 

BIO: 毕洪生博士,美国马里兰大学环境科学研究中心(University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science)教授。渔业海洋学家,主要研究浮游生物的空间分布及其在海洋食物网中的作用。长期从事浮游生物水下成像系统的开发,并与前沿的深度学习技术相结合,在沿海水域浮游动物的时空动态研究以及综合生态系统管理中起着至关重要的作用。该系统目前已经应用在中国近岸核电冷源致灾浮游生物实时监测,同时也在切萨皮克湾,加拿大北太平区,及白令海浮游动物监测得到应用。此外,毕洪生博士还使用声纳成像系统来探索捕食鱼类和海蜇的空间和时间动态。
