1977: Graduated Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University

1982: Ph.D. (Doctor of Science) on systematics and life history of cold water brown algae

Academic positions

1982-1992: Assistant Professor and Lecturer of Faculty of Science, Hokkaido University

1989-1990: Alexander von Humboldt Fellow (German Fellowship to work in University of Konstanz )

1993-1994: Associate Professor of Faculty of Science, Kobe University

1995- Present: Professor of Kobe University Research Center for Inland Seas

1993-1997: Editor-in-Chief of ‘Phycological Research’ (Journal of the Japanese Society of Phycology)

2004-2006: Editor-in-Chief of ‘Phycologia’ (Journal of the International Phycological Societya

Current major Research Topics

l        Environmental studies to clarify the dynamics of introduced marine organisms, especially macroalgae and barnacles, associated with international ship operations (ballast tank/ship hull communities)

l        Molecular phylogeny and genomics of the Heterokonts and brown algae [Ectocarpus full genome sequencing research project, Heterokont Tree of Life project, etc.]

l        Monitoring and restoration of coastal ecosystems using seaweeds

l         Phylogeography of marine macroalgae
