Mission 31
Updated on£º2014-5-30      Visits£º1777

Dear Teacher and Student,

On June 1st, history will be made yet again in the world of marine research as Fabian Cousteau and a team of aquanauts will descend and remain in Aquarius, the world’s only underwater marine habitat and laboratory, for 31 days.

One of the participants in this historic expedition is Dr. Brian Helmuth, a professor with Northeastern University and an adjunct faculty member with Xiamen University.  Dr. Helmuth will spend about 10-14 days onboard Aquarius and will conduct research focusing on human impacts to the ocean.

As he is affiliated with Xiamen University, we are in a unique position to communicate with him while he is underwater, onboard the Aquarius. We would therefore like to solicit questions from students regarding ocean sciences, climate change, and the ocean that we can send to Dr. Helmuth. He, in turn, will respond to these questions via blogs and vlogs while onboard the Aquarius (interested parties can follow the entire 31 day expedition on http://mission-31.com while translated updates of blogs and information can be found on the COSEE China Weibo site.

This is a unique opportunity for students here in China to interact on a global level with ocean scientists halfway around the world and we encourage their involvement.  If students could send their questions to us either via email (coseechina.xiamen@gmail.com) or weibo before June 6th, we can get them to Dr. Helmuth.  Please have the student state their name and year in school as well as the school in the email so we can make sure they are credited.

Attached please find some further details on Mission 31 as well as the Aquarius itself.  If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with us.

Sincerely,

COSEE China (Xiamen)
