Abstract:

The implication of ultrahigh resolution mass spectrum Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) has expanded our knowledge of the molecular compositions of natural organic matter. Atmospheric deposition contribute a non-negligible fraction of organic carbon (OC) to the ocean. However, information regarding the molecular composition of the atmospheric OC is limited. We first applied FT-ICR-MS to a large aerosol sample set to characterize the water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) composition of oceanic aerosols. Our results showed that owing to the powerful resolving capacity, we can identify thousands of compounds in each aerosol sample. Based on the molecular composition, we can further identify the primary sources of WSOC in the aerosols, and how atmospheric processes affected the molecular composition of WSOC in the coastal seas and open ocean.
