实验室主要依托厦门大学海洋与地球学院、环境与生态学院开展人才培养。拥有海洋科学博士后流动站、海洋科学博士后学位一级学科授权点、环境科学与工程博士后流动站、环境科学与工程一级学科博士点；拥有海洋科学国家一级学科重点学科，环境科学国家二级学科重点学科。此外，厦门大学与美国特拉华大学于2012年正式启动“海洋学双博士学位”项目。纳入该项目的博士生需要在两校同时注册，并在对方学校进行至少三个学期的学习或科研活动（免缴学费），在完成两校博士学位要求的前提下，可以同时获得厦门大学与特拉华大学授予的博士学位。有意向加入本实验室的研究生，可咨询实验室科研人员信息，并报考老师所在的学院。

 实验室重视培养学生的学术视野，积极聘请国际知名学者为学生开设课程及讲座，使学生了解国际学科前沿，拓展思维空间，同时结合国（境）外合作交流项目，寻求与国际知名院校合作途径，支持学生联合培养。实验室开展多样化人才培养项目，定期举办研究生暑期学校，并于2008年支持研究生建立“水环境科学研究高校联盟”、学生凌峰论坛，2016年起举办“研究生学术论坛”。还设立了多项奖学金，旨在鼓励与培养优秀学生，如2014年起设立“杰出博士后基金”、“优秀博士生基金”、“本科生暑期科研奖学金”。

Dual PhD Degree: A dual PhD degree program in oceanography is offered between Xiamen University and the University of Delaware, which allows students from either university to earn a doctoral degree from both institutions. The program is based on acceptance of equivalent courses taken at either university and a tuition waiver at the host university.
