Optional Tours

The China Travel Service Xiamen provides several routes for participants of the 10th IEBS. The tour information desk will be open with registration desk. Please contact Ms. Rurong Li onsite or by email (lirurong@hotmail.com) to book the tour or for any questions.
PST 1: Gulangyu Island, Half Day Tour (May 22nd, 2 pm,)
Duration: Approx. 9 hours
Pick up from hotel, transfer to the ferry for a 7-minute boat trip to Gulangyu. Take a peaceful walk and visit the buildings before visiting Shuzhuang Garden, a beautiful seaside garden and the famous Piano Museum. Taste the famous Oolong Tea in a local tea house followed by a scenic drive on the Island Ring Road along the East Coast of Xiamen. Then take the Lujiang Night Cruise, back to Xiamen and transfer back to hotel.

PST 2: Yongding Hakka Earth Castle, One Day Tour (Ex Xiamen)
Duration: 12 hours
Hakka Earthen Castle
  The West part of Fujian province is a rural area dominated by rugged terrain and farmland. The Hakka inhabitants, an ethnic minority, built earthen castles (Tulou) for their clan homes and they are found beside the streams flowing from the highlands. Over twenty thousand of these houses still stand today, ten of which are over 600 years old. The oldest one, “Fu Xing Lou” in Hu Le town, was constructed over 1,200 years ago and is regarded as a “living fossil” of the construction style of central China.  

Pick up at 08:30 a.m. and take a 3.5-hour scenic drive to Hongkeng Tulou Cluster, the most concentrated of all earthen house clusters. Some of the house designs are unique, including the Zhenchenglou, Fuyulu (“Five-Phoenix House”) Kuijulou, and Rushenglou. Also visit Chengqilou-The biggest Tulou in Yongding County following a very classical design with a large central hall before transfer back to Xiamen after the tour.

PST3: Quanzhou, One Day Tour (Ex Xiamen)
Duration: 8 hours
Quanzhou
Quanzhou, once a great port city on the maritime Silk Road, is often compared with Xian for its importance in ancient trade and cultural richness. The city of Quanzhou was founded as early as 718AD. While other areas of China were still undeveloped, the "Coraltree City" (old name for Quanzhou,) had already grown into one of the world's biggest sea ports in the Tang Dynasty. Modern Quanzhou is a city of contrasts. While still having lots of back alleys with little shops and merchants there are also the shopping strips selling the latest fashions, electronics, DVDs and music, etc.

Pick up at 09:00 a.m. and travel on the freeway to Quanzhou (about 80 minutes), once an international port city on the maritime Silk Route. Marco Polo regarded the location as “one of the ports of the world with the biggest flow of merchandise”. Visit Kaiyuan Temple, one of China’s largest and most important Buddhist temple, and the nearby East & West Pagoda, said to be the best preserved stone pagodas in China, Ashab Mosque, the oldest Mosque in China and rated as one of the top ten Muslim holy sites of the world, and the nearby Guandi Temple, Maritime and Archaeological Museum highlights artifacts from the bustling activities of earlier years Transfer back to Xiamen after the tour

PST4: Xiamen-Wuyi Mountain, Three Day Tour (Ex Xiamen)
 Duration: 3 days/2 nights
Mount Wuyi
Mount Wuyi, in the northeast of Fujian, is listed as World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. Mount Wuyi is the most outstanding area for biodiversity conservation in south-east China and a refuge for a large number of ancient, relict species, many of them endemic to China. The serene beauty of the dramatic gorges of the Nine Bend River, with its numerous temples and monasteries, many now in ruins, provided the setting for the development and spread of neo- Confucianism, which has been influential in the cultures of East Asia since the 11th century.

Day 1: XIAMEN/MT. WUYI
Fly to Mt. Wuyi by evening flight.

Day 2: MT. WUYI
After breakfast, take bamboo raft to visit the Nine-twist Stream, Song Dynasty Ancient Street, Sanqing Daoism Palace, and Harmonious Temple.

Day 3: MT. WUYI/DEPARTURE
After breakfast, visit the Water-Fallen Cave, Dahongpao Tea Scenery Spot, then depart from Mt. Wuyi after dinner.
